As part of an $8 billion initiative to develop our country’s first nationwide project of high-speed intercity passenger rail service, the Milwaukee-Madison high-speed rail project was awarded $810 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds by the USDOT (U.S. Department of Transportation).
This money will help refurbish stations and improve existing rail so that 110 mph service between the two cities is possible. Also, an additional $12 million was awarded to improve the track between Milwaukee-Chicago. The intent is to upgrade to high speed service some time in the future. Another $1 million was awarded to Minnesota and will be used to explore eventual extention of the 110 mph high-speed rail project to the Twin Cities.
By the end of 2010, construction on the Milwaukee-Madison line is scheduled to start. It is supposed to be completed by January 2013.
Milwaukee has many public transportation options available today.
