Pump Up The … Tires

If you’re like me, you probably drive around a little too much looking for a gas station with the cheapest possible gas. Saving a few cents a gallon means a lot to me month over month. Well, I recently read a way to improve your miles per gallon (MPG) by around 3%, using as much as 7 cents less per gallon of gas. The trick is having your tires inflated to the recommended pressure for your vehicle.
There are a lot of other positives, too, to inflating your tires to that recommended pressure. Here are just a few to keep in mind:
1) Your car handles better. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says underinflated tires contribute to 660 deaths a year.
2) The correct pressure extends the life of your tires by up to 15%.
3) About 3.3% less CO2 is emitted when your tires are not underinflated.
Also, when you live in an area of the country that actually has “winter driving”, like Milwaukee, then it is important to understand that for every 10 degrees F that the temperature drops, the pressure in your tires is reduced by a couple pounds per square inch (PSI).
Amazon has a pretty cool digital tire gauge available for a very reasonable cost. I got myself one and it works great!
Keeping my tires inflated is an easier way for me to save those few cents per gallon! I’ve stopped driving around, using up gas, while searching for lower prices.
Here is information on auto parts stores that might come in handy now that winter is here in the Milwaukee area.
